I have tried like crazy to get some fish, but the local fish store has nothing I want. and he refuses to order anything but the standard stuff. I would like a mate for my fire mouth, but he oloy gets and order every few months, its so frustrating!! I will order if its safe, but I live in Montana where its pretty cold right now. what do you think, order by mail or wait? thanks :)

I've never ordered for two reasons.

I like to be selective. I name them before I buy them.

I don't like the prices. $40 for shipping?!

It seems to be ok though. The extravagent prices are because they ship with disposable heaters and inside of styrofoam.

i would say it's safe as long as you are going to be home when the delivery comes. you don't want the delivery person to leave it on the front step and have them freeze.

No they wont freeze... Thats the whole idea of the heat pack. Also mosy places that cost 40$ shipping is also an overnight guarantee. You will have to be home to sign for it so the shipper knows you have abour 3-5 hours to e-mail him or her a pic of the dead fish in the bag. Its safe if you get it from a reputable place, just a little expensive for 1 or 2 fish... Get a bunch and still use only 1 box for same shipping usually. Then its a good deal.

if it's New World cichlids you're interested in, the best place on earth is: http://tangledupincichlids.com/

if it's African cichlids you're interested in, the best place in the universe is: http://www.davesfish.com/

have you asked local LFS if he'd order in the fish you want, if you paid him in advance? shipping charges for water are high. buying a single fish on line makes little sense. are you a member of the American Cichlid Assoc.? members enjoy the ability to trade/buy fish quite inexpensively from other members.
