Well thought I'd post a thread of my recent Ohio buck. Hopefully I worded the thread title good enough that anti-hunters can steer clear or atleast know what to expect. Please dont post anything hatefull here towards hunting either. I will not discuss hunting ethics or the reasons why we hunt on the public forum. Its like religion and politics, folks can have strong opinions. I know I am taking a chance posting this on these forums, but hey, its who I am and not ashamed and hiding it, otherwise I wouldnt be doing it.

Any other hunters out there? Please post your pics if you got one this year, or your story if you dont have pics. If you do, may I suggest posting only non-bloody pics. Nothing fires up the anti's like a picture of a deer that been gutted with blood all over it. Not that I wouldnt mind but we must remember this is a public forum, and many would take offense.

So here is my buck from ohio's gun season:

Its a nice lil 9-point that I got with my muzzleloader. Nothing huge but I am proud of all deer I take wether its a big buck or nice doe. I do not hunt specifically for trophies. I do pretty much live off venison though, and those who know me often enjoy my gourmet dinners!

Congrats! We have waaaaaaaaay too many deer in Ohio, and they kill and maim a lot of people. Unless we are bringing back Felis concolor, we need something to limit their numbers. Unless someone wants to go out there with rubber bands and neuter all the bucks. Any takers? No?

I do get really PO'd at hunters that think they have a license to trespass, lie, steal, and vandalize. But they're the guys that are using illegal weapons too. And a snowmobile or ATV seems to convey the same rights. A bowhunter has paid us for exclusive hunting rights, and he always has to chase off poachers. Then there are the guys who set up stands facing into our land who are planning on shooting onto our land and claiming that they’re following a wounded animal. The bad guys give hunting a bad name, and there’d be a lot more property owners open to hunting if they didn’t have fences cut, things stolen, etc.

Anyway- end of sermon. The serious bowhunters and muzzleloaders are cool, and it does take a lot of skill, unlike the guys with .50 BAR's!

I don't really have any opinions about hunting, I wouldn't do it but people who do don't bother me. I actually think it's a bonus that you eat the meat in fact and I've only had venison a couple of times (no one sells it in the supermarkets around here ;)) and I remember it being quite yummy.
It is kinda weird how it looks alive, like it's just hangin' out with you as if it were a pet dog.....
Anyway, congrats!

sad. . .

but now that it's dead, can you make me some chili? ::drool::

LOL! I wont get into it, but will say that alot of folks dont realize how important managing deer population is, well atleast in some areas of the world. Go up far north in canada were deer have natural predators and a lot higher mortality and a practically infinit amount of land, its not as big of deal but in some states in the US its very important to keep the population within certain limits.

There are alot of hunters out there that give the term a bad name. But myself and several of the hunters I know try to be the best hunters we can. I mostly enjoy bowhunting but passed up on all the deer i saw in bowseason this year - either too small or just didnt get a nice shot (I wont take a chance of wounding an animal with a less than perfect shot). And yeah, we eat alot of venison in my house. Actually I grew up on it. It was VERY rare for us to ever have beef or pork as a kid, my parent were pretty poor. I think it was better that way though, we always ate healthy balanced meals and such, and I turned out to be a big time cross country runner. But unfortunately moving to the city and falling into the fast food slump has taken its toll! LOL!

But venison is one of those things that I think has to be cooked right to turn out well. And I know its not for everyone, nor is anything! But there are some excellent recipe books out there like "Cooking Wild in Kate's Kitchen" I use.

I like the fact I can can go from field to table all myself... I mean I think I can process deer more sanitary than most of the meat you get at the store. No bandsaw has been through my steaks. I can clean my knives and my table up a lot more frequently than any butcher will. I can be as picky as I want with fat. I can make the cuts I want and package it per my normal serving size. I love making sausage and jerky too. Trail bologna I dont make since I havent been able to make it as good as the local buthcer does, but I will give them the ground meat myself for them to turn into bologna, which is much leaner than what they would do themselves, and I think it turns out great.

Anyway, congrats!

Yeah, its the best way to do it IMO. Like I said above too many hunters take pictures with the deer cut open and guts laying on the ground beside it, or with blood coming out its nose, or of the back of the tailgate. IMO this isnt honoring the deer or a good way to remember it. Atleast for one to capture the nature of where it was with the deer looking as if it was still alive just sitting there in a natural pose, honors the deer so-to-speek.
