What substrate would be best I know the finer the better but I don't know if the smallest I can get is good. The smaller sort of gravel feels a bit rough and kind of pointy in a gravel way, would this be ok for cories or would I be better off getting a bigger gravel that is alot more smoother?

corydoras are very subject to having their "whiskers" rubbed off on sharp gravel, therefor the smoothest you can find is best. you don't have to have sand .. there are lots of varieties of smooth 'gravel' in many different sizes. if you can't find anything appropriate at your LFS try a local garden center.

Whats better for them though, smaller smooth gravel or larger smooth gravel?

i have big, flat river stones on one side of my tank and sand on the other, my cories dont really seem to care which substrate they nose around in, although its funny to watch them bury themselves up to the eyes in the sand as they rummage around.
