so i got my fish tank back today and its fixed. i went to lowes and got a floor jack for the basement so my floor dont bow. now i while i was at lowes i looked for pool filer sand and they said they didnt have it. i called it pool filter sand. so does anyone know where else to get it? and some name brands...or something i can read on it to make sure im getting the right stuff. thanks a lot.

I don't know about pool filter sand...but I just used "play" sand it was only like 5 bucks for 60lbs and it worked just fine.

I wouldn't use pool filter sand because there is a lot of sharp edges in the sand, it's pretty whole. You should use the "Play Sand" at lowes.... the kind that goes in sand boxes.

thats what i was gonna do at first, but everyone reccomends the pool filter because play sand gets annerobic bacteria in it. so im looking for this right now. if not i guess i can do graval maybe....

1) whats everyone else think...pool filter or play?
2) how many pounds of rock does it usually take to fill up a 125g?
3) where can i find pool filter sand?
4) what are some brand names...maybe that you use?
5) what are somethings on the bag, like info so i know if i found the right stuff?

Pool filter sand is the way to go. Playsand needs to be rinsed and still looks like mud after you do. The pool filter sand I get is called AquaQuartz and is NOT sharp. It's actually safe for stingrays (which is why I use it)

I've had play sand and I hate the way it compacts and looks. Keep searching for pool filter sand. It beats the hell out of play sand IMO.

Try to check some smaller hardware stores. That's where I usually find mine.
Quickcrete sand isnt bad either if you cant find PFS. 3M makes some colored sand, but it's hard to find (usually have to order it)

ok now i saw a few different quickcrete sands. all purpose and so on...what kind would i get?

Here are a couple pics of what my sand looks like, and it is playsand...mine didn't get "muddy" looking or anything it was VERY dusty like at first and even though I rinsed it well it did fog up quite a bit at first, but once settled it was fine...now, when I do water changes it does look foggy for a bit but clears up rather quickly. Not the best pics but you can see it. The black is eco-complete that I had under the sand for the plants but through water changes and stuff some has mixed in.

The play sand I get is so fine that it looks like mud. I just don't care for it at all.
once I went with a coarser sand I was pleased.

this may be a stupid question, but do u need to 'vacuum' the sand? if so, how?

or how do u keep it clean?
