VERY STRANGE molly breeding behavier

okay,
this is a bit weird.
my female cyan sailfin has been sitting in a cave for about 1 and a half weeks now, whilst my male orange sailfin has been chasing all other fish away from it except for my baby 1 inch long bristol nose. I thought the female must have been sick, while my male is trying to stop the other fish from bothering her, if that isnt strange enough, today i woke up and fed them, and the male was swimming up and getting food, coming down and spitting it into the cave, i was following the food to see where it was going and noticed something really strange, the female is eating some of it, and leaving the rest for a whole truckload of fry she has under there with her. the male is now VERY territorial around that cave, and wont let anything past his blockade.
i have not yet seen the female defending, but i can imagine she wouldnt be to pleased about another fish in her cave.
Now, I am absolutly 100% sure they ARE sailfin mollys.
I am going to get some batteries for my camera so i can post some pics up.
Anyone had anything like this happen to them?

the mollies are big- like 3 to 4 inces long and are sail fins if it helps.
