Just finished doing a water change on my 125 gallon tank. was careful not to over fill it. cleaned the gravel added the dechlor. the whole works.

I put the python away and 10 minutes later i come back to find water running across my floor. I freaked out and shut off the filter thinging i must have had a leak, but i couldnt find one and the water kept running. So i stuck my head threw the aquarium stand and out the back (threw the open part for hoses and such) and saw watter running down the back.

see, a few weeks ago i'd used a 3 foot piece of aquarium tubeing as a "snorkle" for the Venturi air intake on my powerhead. Hung it behind the tank to muffle the sucking noise and all was good. Until tonight when i bumped the tube while doing the water change and didnt notice it had come off of the power head. of course it started a syphon and now my floor is wet.

:duh: :duh: :duh: :duh: :duh: :duh: :duh: :duh: :duh:

never occured to me i'd need a check valve for it.

An extra water change never hurt anyone!!! :dive: :D

yeah, i just wish it didnt hafta drain all over my floor. hehe

I’ll see your stupid siphon (which I’ve done with air tubing) and raise you a cracked glass.

I was doing a complete relocate and cleaning of my 45g tank during winter. I washed some new gravel in a bucket with the hose outside and let it sit for a couple hours while I emptied and moved the tank. When I got around to setting it all up and filling it with water, I turned the sink on full hot to get the warm water flowing through the python, but forgot to adjust it back down. The cold gravel had cooled the glass, so with the hot water…..CRACK! It was about half way full, it didn’t blow out but the back plate spit corner to corner. I had to trash the whole thing.

I guess this wouldnt have bugged me so much if i were a newbie, but i've kept fish most of my life. I generaly consider myself a relitivly competent fish keeper. But, once in a while i pull a mother of a blue manuver. I'm glad to know i'm not the only one. time to invest $1.39 on another check valve.

Just a caution, those valves can clog after a period of time, with your unfiltered house air going through them. First, the flow decreases, then enough to prevent the check valve from functioning, then complete blokage. Check them regularly.

My advice - don't use the venturi at all. It reduces the flow coming out of your powerhead and all the areation you will ever need should be provided by the water motion and the water surface.
