the willow tree is much like many of the stem plants in the aquarium. a live branch cut from a tree should develop roots.the roots should remove nutrients from the water and outcompete the algae for food.

Good point star_rider, but I'll bet more people experiencing GW will be able to acquire a few willow branches easier than a few handfuls of extra stem plants :)

Hi outcompete is a little under stated. If a tank is chucked fuul of plants it still is possible to get green water and if you do get no amount of plants you add will kill it or outcompete it for food. If left in the tank too long it's posible for the willow braches/es to outcompete your aquatic plants as well. Put the branch in a tank and it will be come the top and only nutrient eater in the tank if left to long. But on the bright side you will have crystal clear water.

yes it will..willows are nutrient hogs..I'll do some checking as my forestry is a bit rusty..I believe alder replaces some nutrients much like legumes do for a farmer field. tho I'm not sure you want to do this..
most trees that form 'sucker' branches will do the same.
