ILOVEBETTAS

It's Cory Lover's cat!
30 gal.
----------
3 mollies
3 platies
3 guppies
3 swordtails
6 cories

I will do 2-1 ratio with livebearers.

That sound good?

I agree, unless you have a good plan to get rid of the fry, like a LFS that would take fish or something (mine does, I don't know about other people's).

Since this is pretty unlikely, I would suggest getting one type of livebearer, a small school of tetras and a centerpiece fish, like a ram.

The problem with LFS's and livebearers is that you will be extremely lucky to find one that will take them. You would need show quality fish to impress them in the least. Reason being that the fish are so easy to duplicate anyway.

This is true. Luckily I have a very good relationship with my LFS's store owner.... They take any of my platy fry that manage to survive being eaten by the other fish.

I think you should go with a community tank with lots of different kinds of fish, not just livebearers. If you want livebearers, I would go with a ram as a centerpiece fish because they are not aggressive (I've had gouramis before- as they get older they can, and sometimes will, kill other fish) and they stay fairly small (about 3 inches, but it depends on the kind you get). That is just my personal opinion. I wouldn't go with a betta because unless you get a female, you can't be positive they won't be aggressive. You won't really be able to know until you put them in the tank. And often the aggressive ones will go after brightly colored fish, such as guppies. Female bettas, however, are also quite attractive.

i think you should stick iwth one species also. with your size of tank, you could have a good sized group of swordtails or mollies, which also need a different ratio than platies. they need a 1:3 ratio because they can get a little nippy as they age, and need to be distracted. if you want plates, a 1:2 ratio would work, or you could get all females. there is no color difference IME between males and females.
