One of my emperor tetras has what looks like 2 white curved thorns comming out of a red hole in his side and a white squiggly thing inside his tail fin.

Is this a parasite?
It looks horrible, it is safe for my hands to be in there? These things cant transfer to humans can they?

What can I do to identify and cure this? I have lots of live plants, shrimp and dont want to kill them with meds.

I have the same question, except I have something like tapeworms in my tank. I'm paranoid about getting them myself. Would it be safe to stick my hand in there?

You'll be fine with tapeworm. That's only transmitted to humans by ingestion of the larvae by eating undercooked fish.

you will be fine i have had my hands in many a prasite ridden tank in just the last few years due to people taking poor care of there tanks and really low filtration (run a tank maintenance buisness) if your really paranoid like my buddy just get some elbow length gloves

Sounds like anchorworm...harmless to you, but difficult to rid your fish of....especially with shrimp in the tank.
