Rainbowfish aggression

I was wondering about the personality of the different rainbowfish families. Currently I have three Melanotaenia splendida inornata (checkered rainbowfish). They are currently in quarantine and they constantly bully each other. Yesterday I noticed that some scales were missing on one of the fish...most likely because of being rammed into. My question is are all of the rainbowfish like this or is it only the Melanot. species? Also, how can I deferentiate between males and females?

Thanks

I have 7 splendida splendida in a tank. They chase each other around a bit, but no real aggression... Not since the big male chased the small male out of the tank a year or so ago... :(

Anyway. Males are easy to tell. The two top fins will overlap on a male while they are separate with the female in most of the rainbows. Might have to mature a bit before you can tell tho.

The guys here injured themselves quite a bit recently while spawning, but they are getting better now. And there are lots of babies from that...
