What do you think of black background and gravel?

Would this look good or too dark? I will have lots of silk plants and driftwood and mostly light/bright colored fish. Thanks.

I have a black background with normal coloured gravel, I'm quite happy with the effect. I think it helps to show up the colours of the fish too. I'd say, if that's the look you want, go for it. Personally I prefer a slightly more natural look (live plants, driftwood, naturally coloure gravel) but the all black look should be good too!

Actually I just put in some black gravel/sand and just LOVE it. It looks very cool and really makes the live green plants sing. I don't have a black background however, I fear it might make the tank too dark. I have positioned all my cords and such behind plants and driftwood - my walls are white/cream. All in all, the tank look light and bright even with my black sand.

I think it would look good. My 5 gallon has a black background and black gravel and the plants, driftwood, and betta just pop right out.

Fish in aquariums (like in the wild) will camouflage with their surroundings. This is based on gravel and your background. From what I have observed, fish will become a lighter, less vibrant color when there is lighter gravel and a lighter background. When there is darker background and darker gravel, the fish are a darker more vibrant color.

Any reason the water level is low on your tank? Might get less of a "Babbling Brook" sound effect from the filter is level is higher.

Tank looks Great!

bichirs need atmospheric oxygen from time to time is one reason its lower another reason it discourages escape attempts and third it lets them breach the surface without hitting the glass tops-Anne

Already then!
