I did the salt treatment slowly putting in 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon. How long should i leave the salt in there two weeks, same as with the ich treatment? Would this treatment work at killing the parasite or do i need the chemical additives for the water to get rid of this? The guy at the pet shop advised me not to use any of their meds for parasites etc, because of the fact that they are to strong and will rot out the silicone and my tank would start to leak. He is not just a fill in employee either! He is a fish specialist that is barely ever in and i trust him. Is he right? Second why would he lie about it if he is advising me to not get any of their products, hes obviously not trying to make money off me.

On the other hand there is this place that is called aquarium city that told me to use the the same products the other guy at petco told me not to use and said it was fine. Whos telling the truth.

I'm not sure what parasite you are treating for but two weeks should do it for ICH.

To my knowledge, the chemicals will not rot your silicone. Salt is the way to go for ICH but not for all parasites. Some parasites will require a chemical medication but you are better off using a hospital tank or quarantine tank for treatment.

The first thing you need to do is identify the problem your fish is having.

Some can definetly stain the silicone but not the glass.

the guy was right to tell you to use salt. here is a wiki on ick. the best one around by dave http://aquafacts.net/wiki/index.php/Ich

Let us know if it gets better

I don't want to have staining in the first place. I have used the salt treatment for 1 week now and no improvements. Should carry it on to 2 weeks. There is still this one white dot o one cichlid and the other fish are fine. If i do decide to buy the chemicals for him and treat him in a heated bucket with a filter would the other fish still be affected? It is not ich. It is not sprinkle but just one dot that has gotten bigger over time. I really do not want any color change or harm to my main tank. I do not have a hospital tank. Would marycn work? Its either viral, or parasites, or fugal infection.

some parasites are effectively treated with salt(ie ick) as are some bacterial or fungal infections.

best to try and determine if it is bacterial, fungus or parasite. tho parasites typically are easier to identify from bacterial/fungus.

broadstroke treatment may not be effective. bacterial infections are not treated with the same meds as parasites.

if it is bacterial it could be treated with maracyn, maracynII general parasites treated with metro and prazi.

if it's viral..the infection would need to run it's course as there is no effective treatment for viral infections. for viral infections you need to try and keep the fish as comfortable as possible.
viral infections can be contained and even destroyed..but usually it is at the demise of the patient.

does it sound viral if there is one white dot on one of my cichlids on one of their fins? If it is any of the others or viral will that one fish be the only one effected? Or even if i treat the one fish in a separate tank will the others still have it.
