I have a dwarf gourami, and Harlequin Rasbora in my 20 gallon now fully cycled (Cycled easily with mild mild spikes had seeded media but then I had a stick on ammonia reader in the tank that had bizarre readings and threw me off for a while :( )
Anyway we are already thinking of upgrading our 20 gallon to a 40 gallon. Big Al's is having some sale on Boxing Day so we are going to go shopping :).

So my question is I would like to pump up my Harli to 8 and have about 8 Neon Tetra and of course my trusty dwarf Gourami, are there any other peaceful fish that are the size and speed of a gourami that would be a nice addition and wouldnt' eat Neons or Harlequin.

Do I need to be careful about what sex they are would two males fight etc?

there are several types of Rainbows that when full grown are about the Gourami size and very community minded. I forget the technical name, but there is a type that is 50/50 split between blue & yellow. The front is blue and it fades back into yellow towards the tail. Mine are young and are about swordtail sized....but my LFS has full grown ones that are about 4 inches and very much the same size as a gold or blue gourami. I would suggest 1-2 of them.

but my suggestion is based on your upgrade to 40g....not if you stay with 20g

Oh yes me 20 is too limited and we want to beable to see the fish we have swimming with more space too I will do some investigating on the Rainbows thanks.

I love my keyhole cichlids. Their colors are neutral but the contrast is intense depending on their mood, they are peaceful and have a lot of personality.

Those Rainbows are nice I saw some at my local LFS tonight they were called Dwarf Neon Rainbow very nice I like their different shape too.
I'm so looking forward to a bigger tank it was hard to judge the day I got my 20 with its matching stand how big it would be in my house since it was in a huge store, but now I can see we have room to go much bigger. :)
Hopefully Big Al's will have a nice choice on Boxing Day.

no smallfish...don't get those mixed up....Dwarf Neon Rainbows are NOT the Bosemani I was refering too (thanks Doctor P for that great pix) I have a couple dwarf neon's also and while the males with their bright orange fin edges do look cool....the Bosemani have so much more color and as Doc P stated will become the center piece for your tank.

I have 4 Bosemani in my 75 gallon, and the 2 males are quickly becoming my fav fish. They are determining dominance right now, but once they settle down (it is 75 gal for gosh sakes...spread out boys!) I am going to be quite happy.

There are quite a few different breads of rainbows...but the Bosemani to me are the most colorful.
