I have an african cichlid 55 gallon aquarium and I want to know if i can have plants with the cichlids. Ive heard they sometimes eat the plants and can uproot them.
what do you guys suggest.

amazon swords they worked really well for me. Just make sure every week that you bury the plants covering the roots or the fish will start tearing them apart. Also do not over do it with the plants if you put too many in there then they will rip them appart.
I would say anubias. Their leaves are tough, and they don't have to be rooted, you can just tie them to some wood or rocks. They are undemanding as far as lighting and water perameters are concerned, in fact they can survive outside the tank for a long time.
Anubias nana has done well in my shellie tank, I also have some giant anubias in my coldwater bluegill tank. If they can thrive in that water (cold and very hard) with that fish (mean and ornery) then I'm sure it would do well with non-vegetarian Africans.
I don't, however have any first hand experiance with Africans other than shell-dwellers. Yet, that is. ;)
