oh, come now, folks!
most hitchhiker snails, ghost shrimp, and apple snails are good detritus eaters.

my apple snails produce more detritus than they clean up! sure they will eat and scrape off the ocassional algae on the glass but they make huge, long ugly strands of poop. they will either litter the substrate or get caught on the plants and just wave around. my amano shrimp do an excellent job removing algae from the plants, they are looking a lot more greener and healthier. they even eat the snail poop, which im guessing is still high in algae content (its green for petes sake...)
