We hear so many horror stories pertaining to big chain pet stores and lfs. I thought I would share with you folks an exception to the rule.

Last week I was shopping at my local Petco (Opelika, AL) picking up sons new betta. Of course we took a stroll thru their livestock area and checked out each individual tank. Now for the shocking part, the tanks were immaculate!!! :) All the fish were happy, swimming, schooling, and just looked great. The cichlids were begging for food, the tetras schooling about like they should, and not a single dead or half eaten fish to be seen, and NO ICK !!! It was the complete opposite of the 15 surrounding Walmart stores, or the Petsmart store in Columbus, GA. We enjoyed seeing the quality fish especially the two tanks full of baby blood parrots !!! My favorite and Undyed of course!!!

Now for the sad part, when we got to the end of the tank display we noticed one blue dwarf gourami that was laying on gravel gasping and looking near death. My 5 year old son got very upset and burst into tears, he said daddy I dont want the fish to die. Seeing how upset he was, I decided to grab one of the employees and tell them the situation. When I did he basically lept into action, went into back grabbed a container for the sick fish, got my son involved by letting him hold the container, while he netted the gourami. He then told my son he would take the fish to the fish doctor so he could get better. This made my son feel much better, and proved that their are people who care and have enough responsiblity to do their job properly. So good job to Petco and good job to the employee who helped me out. :)

Now that is good!

I was so impressed! I would definetely feel comfortable buying fish from them. Im planning on a 150 or 180 FW tank around tax return time... This will be a new home for my 2 blood parrots and rainbow shark, and then Ill go to Petco and get them some more parrot tankmates! :)

i think the best part about that was that the employee went the extra mile by telling ur son he would take the fish to the fish doctor so he would get better, that shows he was more than just a great employee but a great person!

thanks for the story! :)

It's nice to hear that not all petcos are so terrible. Maybe if all took the time to hire some decent employees who understood how to take care of fish, they could all be as nice as yours.

my petco is a lot like yours, but not as good. mine occasionally have a dead fish, and 2 of their employees really know their stuff. I bought a columbian ramshorn from them, and it's still going strong.

That's a very nice post. It's important to remember that not all lfs or boxstore employees are "bad"--some folks work at them in order to create a better situation for the fish.

My Wal-mart is horrible aswell, but I wont go into that (highjacking).

Very nice story!! My local Petstore in N.S, Canada, isn't a big chain, but has a few kinds of fish despite, including convicts and soon to come 11 tanks 3 ponds. I personally have never seen a dead fish their in years, and unlike Wal-Mart, etc., they have gravel, hiding places, and those round coloured glass things. The fish seem to actually NOTICE them when I watch them :joe:

Thats an awesome story, you should write to petco and tell them of your experience I am sure they would like some good news and maybe that employee will get a raise or something to make sure they stay.

You should definitely someone know at the company about this employee. I have worked in the restaurant industry for about 10 years now, and people are so quick to complain, i.e. call up management, but rarely does anyone go out of there way to comment on a job well done.

Thanks for sharing this great story. :)
