I have a 40 gallon tank with a 3.5 inch blood parrot 1 inch jd, 2 inch con and i'd like to add a fish that stays on top. Maybe a Needlefish.......... Any ideas are welcome. I'd like something that will get along with these Cichlids.

Thanks

Sorry but.

I don't see much that can go into that tank.

In a few short months you are going to have a cramped tank with some very angry fish that are going to turn that aggression on what ever you put into it.

If that JD turns out to be a male... and not even a dominant male he is going to have some serious issues with the other fish in his territory. Cons are tough but only when breeding.

My advice. If I were you. I would hold off on putting anything else into the tank.

Oh, I didn't think they be too cramped or fight a whole lot, maybe just into they all gained their own territory. My friend has a full grown Tillapia with his adult JD and 6 inch Bichir in a 50 and they really aren't fighting. They all have staked out their territory. He also has a 6 Hujeta Pike in there and everything is pretty peaceful. I know I have 10 gallons less, but I also have less and smaller fish, even when they are full grown. Thanks for your recommendation!

Many people with aggressive, territorial fish are lulled into a false sense of security when their fish are juveniles, because the fish don't show their true colors until the reach maturity. Then, all of a sudden, you find a fish dead and floating, or severely beat up and requiring separation from the others. This can be a particular problem because it's often hard to find homes (with LFSs or elsewhere) for adult fish. That's why it's so important to learn about your fish before you stock or at least before they reach adult size.

Don't develop a false sense of security because your fish get along now. You'd be amazed at how quickly that can change.

Good luck,
Jim

Blood parrots can reach 8" and so can Jacks. Blood parrots will generally not be nasty to fish which aren't nasty to them but the Jack and even the convict will dispatch just about any top dweller I can think of, with the possible exception of an african butterfly fish but about that I just am not sure.

I'd, quite frankly, be worried about the safety of your BP when they all grow out.

I don't see an African Butterfly lasting too long in there, either, as the Jack and Con (sounds like a drink...) would probably take care of it during feeding time, while the AB watches the surface.
