Chomping betta

My daughter has a 30 gallon fishtank with guppies, platies and sucking loach.
Five days ago she bought a male betta. He appears happy and is both eating live and flake food well. He looks great and the tank is not overstocked but.....this morning i noticed two male guppies have huge chunks bitten from their tails. As all the other members of the tank have lived peacefully together for the last 3 months i can only assume it is the betta that has done it.
Is this usual bahviour for a betta and should I not keep him with guppies?

In my experience, all my bettas have gotten along with other fish with the exception of male guppies. Every time I've tried, my guppies have died a death without a tail. Believe me, they'll lose.

about 75% of the time bettas dont like male fancy guppies.
but my betta is very docile and doesnt mind them.

Like the above posters said, some bettas will attack fancy guppies due to their long tails making them seem like a rival competitive male.

I housed a betta with two fancy guppies for a couple of weeks not too long ago without any problems, however. It just depends on the demeanor of the betta.

The guppies won't initially see any reason to fear the betta and will swim right in his face not knowing that he may give them a nip or two.

Many thanks for that. Watching this fish it is obvious that he has quite a bit of fight in his belly so I have moved all of the male guppies to other tanks. All that is left with him now are a couple of platies and a swordtail.
Now my daughter can choose a few other fish to take their place. Presumably any non fancy, non fin nipping fish will be ok?
Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks again :)

I just bought a male betta that is scared of a male platy... very weird, but it was his 1st day in that tank

never put a beta with a guppy , it will stress them to death!
