Last year for my friends birthday I bought her a small(2.5 gallon) tank with a lit cover, filter, and heater ith a few guppys(we decided she wanted this ahead of time and she was willing ot take the resposibility) unfoutunetly, neither of us knew at that time that you have to cycle the tank, the guppys died. I was thinking as a late christmas gift I would help her set up her tank again today and have her cycle it and in a few weeks buy her a betta

The only problem is, she is not the good at keeping hte tank clean, but I am willing ot help her casue I spend the night at her house usually at least once a week. On the rare occasion that I dont, would the betta be okay without its tank being cleaned for 2 weeks? Or do you have any other recommendations(like some kind of shrimp?)

If someone dosen't want the responsibility of owning a pet then they don't deserve it. Don't do it.

a two gallon tank really is too small for almost all fish, even a betta won't really be healthy or happy if your friend can't keep it clean. shrimp or a snail could be good.

well it would be cleaned once a week or at least once every two weeks

Well also part of the reason she didnt keep it clean was cause she didnt really have the proper suppies, and im planning on buying stuff for her

and im sorry if I sound at all like a troll, if this is really a bad idea I wont do it, its just htat she really wants another chance to have a fish

ya i just talked to her, we decided that we were going to talk to her mom and set up the tank today, but we have not decided one if we want to get a betta or shrimp, but we may just buy all the cleaning stuff today and not actually get the fish till her birthday in feb

A 2.5 gallon betta tank would definitely need the water changed once a week if not twice a week. If you add in a live low-light plant and put the lighting on a timer so she doesn't have to remember to turn it on and off, then I'd say once a week water changes minimum.

i think you should try it. hopefully she'll learn to care for the betta if shes really interested in keeping fish. if not, then just lug the thing home with you.

I have read and re-read this thread. Maybe I am in a foul mood because I have to work. Maybe I see too many people asking for advice and just doing their own thing.

So please do not get too offended.

It might be best for you and your friend to go to a pet store together, pick out a betta that you really like, buy it, and kill it.
