So I was at my local Petco, and asked them for pure ammonia drops, for cycking the tank, and he said they did not have it. I was thinking that putting food in the water could be a substitue, creating ammonia? Am I correct?

You can buy household ammonia from places like Walmart or hardware stores. Be sure that it doesn't contain any perfumes or surfactants. It shouldn't foam when you shake it.

Can I just sprinkle food in the tank however often necessary to create ammonia?

Fish food is messy and is a pain to get cleaned from gravel. The best way to control the amount of ammonia is with pure or clear ammonia. If you don't want to use pure ammonia. Go to your local grocery store and buy a couple of raw jumbo shrimp. Toss one in the tank, let it rot. As it rots it will produce ammonia. There's your ammonia source. The only bad thing about it is it is a little messy and you can't control the amount of ammonia that it produces( you may have to add more).

OR I guess maybe shrimp...

I heard you can put the shrimp in some kind of mesh bag or something and all you have to do is when the tank is cycled, just pull the bag out! Just that you need to be able to handle the smell...

*EDIT* I mean DEAD shrimp that you EAT...

use a stocking..or other fine mesh. place the shrimp in and when it's time to remove..you pretty much hjust toss the mesh with the goo.

btw, the smell of rotting shrimp is not pretty..... :thud:

thats another great reason why ammonia is great. i see no reason why not use ammonia. you can control it more then any other way of cycling the tank.
