I just purchased a 75 gallon tank. I have gone back and forth with two ideas of African Cichilids or doing a tank featuring Severums. I think I want to do the Severum tank, but have several questions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??

1. How many should I put in a 75? ALso what tankmates should i do and why??

2. I will be using a Rena filter and will probably add a hang on at some point. What kind of substrate is best and why?

3. SHould i fishless cycle or use fish?

4. WHat decor should i use?

Thanks peeps!!!!!!!

At full size, I would think that 2-3 max (and that's with no pairs). Obviously when they are smaller, there's more room. I prefer sand, but if probably doesn't really matter much to the fish. Either cycling method is fine once it's completed! :) Sevs will work on plants a bit, so that needs to be considered; otherwise, they don't seem to require anything particular in the way of decor - my tank is pretty bare, others I've seen are heavily planted. Sevs don't seem to hide very much, so that makes things easier.

well??

No other responses?? Tankmates for severums in 75 gallon?? come one peeps help me out!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) :) :look: :look:

Microgeophagus ramireze, microgeophagus altispinosa, a trio of loaches (angelicus or yo-yo's),Maybe a pair of HRP's. Not a whole lot of space once you are done with 3 Severums.

Keep um coming, thanks SUlly

I will be doing only 2 Sevs for the space reason. I want to put some smaller stuff like Columbian Tetras maybe, or i was thiking Kribs!!!!!!! ANy other ideas??

You want other cichlids, or you're looking for dither ideas? Cryptoheros, keyholes, rainbows would all fit as long as you don't get pairs. Firemouth maybe. I have clown loaches in with my cichlids with no issues. You don't need the dithers to be particularly tough, just big enough and fast enough not to be enticing as food. Beyond that, almost anything will be ok. I like rosy barbs for their color and activity.

I have a pair of gold sevs and they're pretty great fish. I would do the sevs and a big school of rummynose or blackskirts or something along those lines, and maybe a smaller plec. I think they would pick on cories too much, esp if you get a mated pair and they breed. I have mine in a 150 with an oscar, a madagascar cichlid, some silver dollars and some pictus cats. The sevs pretty much keep to themselves. If you were looking for some other tankmates, maybe some convicts, they tend to stay a bit smaller.

edit: Also, if you have the choice between fishless or fishy cycling, go fishless every time. It will be a lot less stress on the fish, you won't have as much of a chance at killing them.

I have 2 gold sevrums with 3 reticulated stingrays and about 24 neons in a 125. i know i have to upgrade or atleast get the rays a larger home in about a year but they are small now and eberything is great.
