I currently have 26 frys in a 140L Tote and they will be 5 months old on New Year's Eve. I was just wondering about the male/female ratio of the frys at a pH of 7.8-8.0 and whether I'd be able to identify the sex of a fry after looking at the coloration on the stomach.

In the tote, I can see lots of frys that have the black horizontal line across the middle of the body and are tan in colour, elsewhere. There is probably 6 that are still less than an inch (I guess), while 1 has a pink/red belly. Is it possible that there is only 1 female (about 5/4") while the others are male (about 1.5"+)?

alkaline pH such as yours tend to result in a preponderance of males.

So the number of females compared to the number of males is right. Thank you liv2padl

Would they start to spawn at that age? The largest male is chasing one of the females out of its territory. The other female is just swimming above a cave, while some of the smaller males are fighting between the wall of a glass plant pot that I put in.
