mi water parameters are
1ppm ammonia
<.25 nitrites( a couple of days ago, it was 1.5)
5.0 nitrates

i think some of my bacteria might have died when i turned off my filter 2 nights ago, it was off for about 12 hours. could this be the cause?

How are you cycling your tank (fishy, fishless)? What is your ammonia source? How long have you been cycling?

Uh... THat is a good thing.. Nitrites bad :) Lowered nitrites good :) signaling end of cycle getting nearer :) bacteria is perfectly fine if this is happening :)

When showing 0 amm and 0 Nitrites you are good :)

Process in both is pretty close to the same in my opinion.. Especially the middle to end result..

Fish cycle=fish emitt ammonia to start cycle..

Fishless cycle= ammo manually added by some other source rather than fish.. :)

Result and process are pretty much the same other than the initial source of Ammonia :)

There's more than a couple things different about the two cycles, here's just a couple.

(1) Fishy cycle can permanatly damage fish, Fishless cycle when done right will not.

(2) Fishy cycle allows stocking for only the amount of fish used for the cycle. Fishless cycle will allow for the complete or almost complete stocking of all your fish.
