I've had 2 cory elegans for 6 months now - doing really well. Yesterday, 1 of them looked bloated, tonight he kept shooting to the surface, acting stressed, sitting on wood deco close to the surface. I put him in a breeding trap away from the other fish and now sadly, he's dead. Looking at the body I see nothing unusual apart from it being bloated ( the other elegans is slim ) & 1 of the gills seems red. Any ideas / help, please.

A normal cory will dart to the surface to swallow air, as I'm sure you noticed. :)
The red gill would make me think oxygen starvation or some sort of gill disease, (though true gill diseases are rare)... the bloating makes me think bacterial infection...
Maybe there are too many fish in your aquarium... you said you'd had the cories for six months, did you add any of the other fish more recently? What are you tank specs, number of fish, etc.?

Sounds like a bacterial infection. You might consider treating the other cory. Check your water quality carefully.
good luck
