View Full Version : Does media color really make a difference for bacteria growth?

I saw an ad that stated black media (forget if foam or what) was ideal for bacteria growth. Does color matter?

no. bacteria will colonize everything. the only things that affect bacteria growth are water movement (meaning 02 and nutrients becoming avaliable to them) and surface area.

Thanks Slip. I didn't think so but couldn't come up with a different question to get on the new set-up! Looks awesome BTW!!:)

New York bacteria have long preferred a black medium. But currently they're also leaning to brown.

"Brown is the new black" according to Manhattan bacteria.

???? maybe the light doesnt penitrate the darker media leaving more of the cultured bacteria in the dark.?????

...and since they can't see ammonia, they don't eat it. :)

Checking out my buddies That Fish Place catalog and in the Bio-Chem Stars (pg. 35) ad, it states:
"Black color allows nitrifying bacteria to grow best."

Not that that means anything. Just wanted to prove myself sane!:)

thank you, beviking, for retrieving my funniest post. I have such a short memory that I was taken by surprise and laughed my butt off...

wetmanNY - you're welcome.

somefinnfishy - so then are we to have a filter for light dwelling bacteria and one in the dark for the others? Of course I'm being silly (that's my nature;) )
The more I read that statement the more I wonder where they got that from? Noone here knows? I'm just glad my filter is in the cabinet...in the dark. But the media is white ceramic. Do the bacteria know the difference? Oh, but I'm saved b/c my foam is black. Must be from New York...old stuff.
