Hi I just got an electric blue johanni off my friend, well I think its an electric blue as it is a really pale blue and its about 4 inches long. It has the same body shape as an electric blue has so I think it is one.

I will be doing a fishy cycle with it in my 35 gallon and returning it back to my friend once he has his new tank as this fish was just in a container with no filter and no water changes.

My question is this will it eat flake foods? My friend said he hadn't seen it eat since he had it, which was about 3 weeks. He had been feeding it pellets which he feeds to his oscar. If it can't eat flake foods what should I get for it?

Thanks for the help.

african cichlids are very sensitive to ammonia and nitrite and in all likelyhood, this fish will not survive the cycling process.

sounds to me like this unfortunate fish would best be returned to the LFS until such time as someone comes along to buy it, who is ready to care for it properly.

I'm pretty sure this fish can take it because my friend bought a tank off someone he knew that already had it in there and the water was a dark green colour and smelt disgusting and it was still living in it. He had nowhere to put it because the filter that came with the tank was stuffed and it had been living in that container for about 3 weeks and is still perfectly fine.

climbing onto soap box --- a fish should not have to "take it". when you take a fish home from the shop, it becomes your responsibility to care for that fish in the best possible manner. be it your friend, you, or anyone else ... if you're not going to care for a fish properly (or any pet for that matter) then do the fish a favor and leave it in the shop. at least there's the possibility that someone else will take it home and treat it right. --- stepping off soap box.

Well I looked on the net and most sites say they a hardy fish so it should be fine to cycle it with that fish shouldnt it?

Well its either I do it with this fish or I give him back to my friend and he goes straight back into the container with no filtration because my friend wants it as soon as he gets his tank up and running.

Why don't you tell your friend to either 1.set up a decent tank with filtration, heating etc NOW or2. tell your friend that he is not providing the correct conditions for such a fish and should be returned to the lfs. Honestly this fish is having a hard life. I feel sorry for the b!%$&r.

once he gets money for filter and heaters he is, why do you think I took it I felt sorry for it I thought I was doing the right thing but no everyones just on my back.

we will tell you what is best for the fish, not what is best for you or your friend. if you want us off your back, put the fish in a safe and healthy environment. living in the container it has probably been too stressed and unhappy to eat, which means that it is undernourished and weakened. that coupled with being kept in bad water makes me think that there won't be enough left in the fish to survive more punishment. ask your lfs if they can hold it for a couple weeks.
