I have two red & white ryukins. For the past 2-3 days one of them has been at times floating upside down at the top of the tank. As soon as he sees me, he flips over and proceeds with his activities normally. I feed them sinking pellets, so he doesn't usually surface unless he gets overexcited when I'm going to feed them.

Has he possibly taken in too much air? And if so, how can I deflate him?

what size tank are they in?
what are your nitrAtes, nitrItes and ammonia readings?
did you cycle the tank?

Everything is fine. It's a 20 gallon. I had it cycling for over 3 months before I got fish for it. I've had them for 3 or 4 months now. I do frequent water changes. I've done more because of a brown algae problem. Last change was two weeks ago because I've been busy with the holidays.

try feeding boiled peeled peas, that may help a bit.

Sounds like a swim bladder problem to me, which ryukins are prone to. Unfortunately, it's not a question of "deflating." there's really no cure, sometimes shelled peas can fix the problem. have you been feeding them floating or sinking food? often, floating food can worsen these problems. I've only seen one fix that helped the fish live for quite a while afterward- a harness, of all things. check out this site:

i would definitely try some shelled peas before you try anything else, though.

Does it wobble alot as its moveing? If so, it has swimbladder. Try fasting for a few days.

This post is over 2 months old. Hopefully the little guy turned out okay.
