I just recently got 2 apple snails. I let my tank run before I got them and made sure the ph, temp and everything was good to go before I put my lil snails in. I have a 2 gal tank that I had gotten for Christmas, yay! They have been doing fine so far but I’m not sure if the filter that came with the tank is too strong for the lil guys X.X Sometimes the force of the water takes them and they just float around. I heard that they do that and its just another way for them to get from one place to another and sure it looks fun, but I just want to make sure its okay. And also they have been leaving slimy tracks everywhere! Is that normal? I’m not sure if it’s their slime or the food that’s making the tank a little cloudy, other then that they’ve been great. About the filter again, it just seems so strong, maybe too strong for them to actually move around! I’m not sure >.< Do apple snails need a filter?

The floating around isn't bad as long as its not too much force. The slime trail I have never heard of and mine dont do this. Some one else might know that has a little more experiance. I am new to snails myself.

When he floats around he seems fine and he can get down himself, but there have been myabe 1 or 2 times were he just keeps going and going and he bumps into the side of the tank (not hard though) so I just move him a little bit to help him get down -.^

mabe try adding something to slow the surface movement a little all should be fine with that. I am still wondering about the slime though this one I am not sure about.

Hmmm...Ill try to slow it down some. Right now the filter at its lowest setting, but ill think of somthing. Yeah, I've been trying to get info on the slime thing and have asked some people and all they say is its snail tracks. But I dont know why noone elses snails do this haha

slowing down is easy add something to difuse the water flow such as an attached spunge.

Hey I tried that sponge Idea and it slowed down the flow of the water just great! My little snail seems to be moving about a bit better too xD And the sponge won't stop the fliter from working as it should right? As long as the water is getting through?

Snails like playing in current (floating about). It's completely normal. When they get a bit bigger you can probably remove the sponge without problems.

However, they shouldn't be leaving slimy trails. The only snail I ever had that had mucus was on its deathbed. If they're active and eating, and you keep the water clean, they should stop having those trails. (The one I mentioned that died was neither active nor eating).

Try searching applesnail.net . It's a great resource for snails and you might find out something about the snail trail.
