I've had good success with these, but I only really use this to supplement flake food for my fish.
You fill it with tap water to the top, add salt and eggs (or the prepackaged mix), and stir it around. Then you put the cover on. You fill up the clear plastic cup that's on top with more water, put it's white lid on top, and then turn it over and place into the base. There is a small circular cut-out in the white lid and when the BBS hatch, they swim towards light, i.e. into the cup.
About 24 hours after you prepare, you will have a ton of brine shrimp in the cup. You can fill the cup back up with water and in 24 more hours, you'll have more in the cup. However, the quantity goes down rapidly. While the first day there is a tremendous amount of shrimp, the second day is maybe 1/2, the third day less, etc. Using the prepackaged mix, I really didn't have any after 3 days. However, the last time, I mixed my own, added what I thought was just a little bit of extra eggs - and I've had them for 3 weeks. Mind you, I don't feed every day and there are at most 20 swimming around right now. Most likely you'd want to change it out after a few days though because the water mix does start to smell after a while.
I don't know, I have no experience with other hatcheries, but I imagine that the ones with air pumps are probably better. Perhaps you can get more out of them? Or perhaps I'm setting myself up for disease in the stagnant water that they are hatching in? You probably could have a steady supply with 2 or 3 of these, just making sure you are making a new batch every 48 hours or so. The BBS will live for a while, so you don't have to use them immediately.
Of course, YMMV, my PH is 8.0 and I've heard hatching BBS is more successful in that kind of PH. Good luck with it.
