I'm thinking about putting some real plants in my aquarium. Just wondering how easy it is to add real plants to a tank once the fish and everything has been setup? How do I go abouts doing this? Will I have to remove the fish then drain most of the water and then place plants in or is there another way to do it?

its really easy just toss them in there. i change my plants around or add them when i am doing a water change just because my tank is big. i think your first step should be to read. there are a lot of plants and some are hard to take care of and others easy. best bet would be to start with something east like java moss and java fern.
how deep is your gravel?
what kind of lighting do you have?

So they don't need to be planted into gravel? and I dont need to remove the fish.. The gravel in the tank is about an inch or so. I just have the incandescent bulbs in the tank now. In my first tank that I had back a few years ago I had real plants they looked similar to this but I don't believe they are the actual ones:

but I am not sure what they were called...

well first of all you should get some power compact screw in bulbs. i have seen them as much as 27w. java mos you can do anything with. what ever you set your mind to. most people put it on driftwood or rocks. java fern does great on driftwood. they are low light plants also. if your really looking into getting plants i would look to increase your gravel depth.

no you dont have to take your fish out. just put your hand in the tank to place the plants.

what do these power compact screw in bulbs look like?

How much more gravel should I put in? Make it about 2 to 3 inches or more or less?

if your going to go with the plants that have roots then you should add more gravel. 2-3 inch is fine. i wouldnt go any less then 2 inch and over 3 inch just takes up more space.

basically like this. the ones i have seen around here been a little different.

You want to keep a few things in mind with the lighting...

Low light tanks will be anything up to maybe 2 watts per gallon. Anything over that you are getting into the realm of needing CO2 injected and a good fertilizer regime.
