I received a new BioCube 29 fish tank that I have decided to stock as saltwater. My tank is about half way through cycling, so I will be ready to purchase my first couple of fish in a few days. My eventual goal is to have the following:
1. Midas Blenny - 3 inches - Qty. = 1
2. Percula Clownfish (aquacultured) - 1 to 2 inches - Qty. = 2
3. Black Clown Goby - 1/2 an inch - Qty. = 2
4. Jawfish - 2 to 3 inches - Qty. = 2
5. Flame Hawkfish - 2 to 3 inches - Qty. = 1
Will these be safe together? I have made myself aware, through research, that the Flame Hawkfish should be added last, if I choose to purchase one. I would most likely purchase them in the following order:
1. 2 Clownfish & 1 Midas Blenny - Totals 5 to 7 inches
***time passes***
2. 2 Jawfish & 2 Gobies - Totals 5 to 7 inches
***time passes***
3. 1 Flame Hawkfish - Totals 2 to 3 inches
Again, this would be within the boundaries of the recommended 5 to 8 fish in the BioCube 29. Thank you for your time. Feedback would be nice.

that's way too many fish for a tank that size

How Many?

About how many inches of fish can I have?

I think I may be an ignoramus or something, but isn't the rule of thumb 1 inch of fish per gallon or something? So, shouldn't those fish (totalling 15 inches) be fine for a 29g? I'm confused, can someone explain? I'm not familiar at all with marine tanks, maybe it has something to do with that.

Marine and freshwater are different in many places, stocking is one of them. However, there realy is no "rule of thumb" that actually works for any aquarium.

Feedback from Others

Thank you all so much for the useful information. Does this mean that I can only have the Clownfish, for example? I also posted this discussion on AquariumBoard and got some good feedback as well:
<<Way, way too many fish, IMO. That's more fish than I'd put into a 55. Whoever told you 5-8 fish for a 29 was being very unrealistic. - posted by OrionGirl>>
<<Welcome to the worold of SW! It's good to see that you're doing homework before starting.

I'm with OG that the levels are too high. A couple of other comments:

The blenny, clowns and goby would be good for a tank of that size, and will probably get along together well.

Jawfish can be very territorial, so two is essentially out of the question. Even a mated pair might not fare well in a tank that size. Jawfish require a very deep bed of sand, plus some rubble, which can be hard to manage in a small tank. Finally, jawfish are escape artists, so the tank needs to be secure.

The flame hawk will limit the kinds of invertebrates you can have, because it will eat shrimp and small crabs. - posted by zanzimog>>
Now, I was not planning on getting any invertebrates. I have purchased 3 small Damsels, as recommended by my LFS.

And what are you planning on doing with the damsels? If you keep them in the tank, then all the fish you listed above are just going to be harrased and/or nipped at by the damsels, possibly to the point of death.

Midas gets about 8 inches.. a bit to big for the 29
clowns are ok
jawfish are aggressive with one another and get big
gobies are ok
flame hawks have been know to eat invrs --> shrimp

recommendations:

pair of clowns tru percs or faulse.. othe types are aggressive
type of watchman goby with pistol shrimp - they hang out together
fire fish - 2-3 as they like to group
small angels -coral beauty, flame, half black ,lemon peel
cleaner shrimp
hermits
snails
sand sifting sea stars
