just started 1st SW..75g. need new filtration. cannister sounds good, but i was thinkin bout miracle mud...looks way cooler, but lots o work

any ideas???

well you jsut said you were doing corals right? i wouldnt go with the canaster. miracle mud can work if you are doing soft corals, but if you are doing anything else i would go with a sump, protein skimmer, phosban, and carbon use (actualy, i would recomend these over miracle mud in any system. ) you can put in a refugium into the sump also

new to the SW gig. anyone know of a good DIY plan. and what is a good cheap skimmer?

i dont think there is such a thing.
the coralife super skimmers are alright. i have one and it does okay, but completly freaks out over the littleist thing. id make sure you have an auto top off unless youw ant water all over the floor. it has happened to me many times.
what would you like a DIY plan for? a sump?

yeah, a sump, i was checkin out somthin like this.

and do you have to drill the tank or is there another way??

with skimmers...is it "you get what you pay for." ?

what size do i need for 75g?

i was looking at a cheapy jebo for a 150g. but i dont know if its worth the hassle. should i just get a good one to start?

it is very much "you get what you pay for." i wouldnt bother with a jebo. but if you say a price range that you have and what you are looking to keep (the type of corals and the number of fish), i can try to recomend a skimmer
you can drill the tank, but it is easier to put in some baffles.

see how there are baffles and bubble traps in between the refugium and the return area? all you have to do is make a few baffles in between your skimmer section, refugium, return, and wanter input line. (if you have everything going in a line along the tank, i would recomend having your skimmer being before the refugium. otherwise, it defeats the purpose to a point.

i was hoping to pay around 100, but i dont think its gonna happen, its probably gonna be closer to 200. i was eyeballin a pacific coast 300. which i think is better for about 200.

i owe to you fishiness, your a lot of help to me. i appreciate it.

thanks

there are ALWAYS skimmers and return pumps for sale.
keep in mind while buying a skimmer that you have to make sure you have enough room in your sump.
i have never used one of the pacific coast ones, nor heard much about them, so i cant help yout oo much with that.

i know when i bought my crappy aquaclear 500s i double the recommended filtration level. is doubling it with a skimmer a good idea or should i triple it or more???
