What should I replace my neons with?

I now have only 4 neons left...one by one they have died off. I asked on hear and was told they do that - my water is fine and nothing in the tank attacks them. anyway, thought I wouldn't get any more if that'll happen. But, thanks to that and a possible copper-related disaster, I have an 8 neon + 2 cameroon shrimp + 5 Amano shrimp void which is in need of filling. I got 5 otos, which accounts for maybe 1/3-1/2 of that. So, should I go for expanding my harlequin school by 8 or so, or getting something new for the middle layer. Tank is a Rekord 96, soon to be heavily planted, 30"x12x15. Also in it are 1 angel, 1 redtail shark and 1 Bolivian ram, compatibility-wise.

Also, now that there are only 4, should I return the neons?

thanks,
momar

see that's what i thought at first. But the red tail only ever bothers the ram, and the angel just sticks to himself. Some of the neons also seemed to kind of waste away before dying.

If their colors faded to a bland pale monotone before they died, it is very possible that they may have developed neon tetra disease.

I'm no expert, but it may be worth looking into.

this is the same thing i thought. mine always left all the fish alone until one day it started going after all the fish in the tank. i had to put them in its own tank. i have heard this story told many times.
