I began cycling my tank today, filled the tank, PH is 7.4 and I added 4 Ginat Danios to begin. I was reading about a product alled cycle that is suppose to assist in cycling a tank?? ANyone used it what did ya think?

In my opinion you are better off without the cycle. It is really just straight ammonia with a fancy name and really does not help cycle a tank. If you want to cycle a tank quickly I would recommend getting bio-spira. It is live bacteria that will cycle your tank and at the same time will detoxify any ammonia or nitrite in your water while it is doing its job.

ya i know what it is, a chemical that you can add to the tank that speeds the cycling process. To understand it you must first know cycling. fish begets amonia, witch begets bactiria that eat amonia and turn it into nitrites, witch begets nitrite eating bacteria that waste nitrates. This chemical is either just a tablet/liquid/powder witch is concetrated amonia to kick start this process (more amonia means more food for benifical backteria) or a mix of both amonia and nitrite both (allowing both kinds of benifcial bacteria to grow faster than it would naturly). I personlay wouldnt use these thigns because you never realy know what they are. And i definalty wouldnt add them to your aquarium if you already have fish in it. Remember, that if man messes with it, its no longer genuine. Just let nature run its course and let the tank cycle on its own.

i agree i just used bio-spira in my 46 gallon bow front and it worked great!! Took about 36 to 48 hours to completely work though

If you just added the danios in the last day or two, you can just do a large water change like 50% or more and then add the bio-spira. In essence you will be starting the cycling process all over again but you will be cycled very quickly. Bio-spira is a very effective product when used correctly and allowed to do the job it was designed for.

LOL!!!!

Sorry, but exactly what about an aquarium is natural? it is all man-made. if we are going to put fish in there, we need to do our best to care for them and keep them safe, even if it means resorting to things like man-made dechlorinator, man-made fish food, and even man-made cycling products like biospira (not Cycle, total waste of $) letting a cycle go on its own without interfering might count as "letting nature take its course" as the fish are poisoned to death by waste buildup. it is not, however, responsible fishkeeping.

Thanks everyone!!!

You have been most helpful. Think I will just let it take care of itself right now. if these fish do meet their deaths I may try Bio-SPira!!

" "Cycle" is an all natural product, which releases massive amounts of benficial bacteria into the aquarium, it is impossible to overdose" That is what the bottle boasts. In my experiances, Biospira is made for overnight cycling and such, Cycle is more meant for helping to reduce ammonia/nitrite levels and such while introduceing new fish, and to make newer aquariums more 'mature' and less stressful through weekly maintence while adding cycle. I have used both products and was quite pleased with the results in both, although i wouldnt recommend using "Cycle" to try and immediatly make a brand new aquarium useful/safe for fish. I do use it whenver i do more than a 30% water change, or when doing a more advanced cleaning of the tank, as well as whenever i add more than 2 fish. the larger bottles when used as the directions state do last quite a long time, and at my LFS you get a decent deal for buying the bigger ones. just my 2 cents worth
