Ok I tested my water from all 3 tanks this morning at work.
How do you think my water quality is?
Now I just did a 10 percent partial water change for all my tanks on Wednesday.

5 gallon tank has one male crowntail betta, one ivory snail and some plants.
Nitrate: 20
Nirite: 0
Alkalinity: 80
Ph: 7.2
Ammonia: 0

10 gallon tank has one male betta, one otto catfish, and one or two Ghost shrimps. I also have live plants in this tank as well.
Nitrate: 20
Nitrite: 0
Alkalinity: 80
Ph: 7.2

30 gallon has 3 bleeding hearts, 3 harlequin rasbora, 2 male guppies,2 cherry barbs, 3 snails, 2 mollies, and two platies. I don't have any live plants in this tank. So the plastic fake one. I also have an airpump going in this tank.
Nitrate: 30 (it was between 20 and 40 it was hard to tell)
Nitrite: 0
Alkalinity: 80
Ammonia: 0
Ph: 7.2

My Alkalinity has always been 80. I'm not really sure why.
I'll be doing another water change on my next day off which is wednesday.
How much water do you guys take out when doing a partial water change?
I usually just take out about 10%.

I don't add fertilizer to my tank very often. Maybe once every month or 2. Sometimes not even that often.

In a tank that is not planted I would recommend doing a minimum of 25% on a weekly basis. You want to keep the nutrients down in the water so the algae is under control. This is done via the water changes. In a planted tank, usually the plants will tell you what they want. I would recommend water changes of at least 40% on a weekly basis. After the water changes every week you can dose your ferts for the plants. You just do not want too many nutrients in the water although some is needed for the plants.

40% water change isn't too much?
I always thought 10 to 20 percent water change was enough.

So is my water qaulity good? Is a nitrate level of 30 ok?
