what's the best way to clean lava rocks?

My red lava rocks are stained with algae, what is the most effective way to clean them? I was thinking of brushing them with brass brush. Is it ok, or there a better way of cleaning them?
 
WAIT WAIT WAIT.

Is this part of your filter? if so DON'T BOIL THEM!! you will lose your bacteria.

If it is part of your filter simple boil 1/4 at a time. Keep your filter dark and after 3 weeks boil the next 1/4...

This will help you to keep from a total new cycle in the filter.
