max lbs of gravel

You could probably fill the tank with gravel without too much risk of that. Consider that the water in the tank weighs 300 kg, so 20-40kg of gravel isn't all that much, and the weight will be partially displaced by water anyway.

Nope. Weight is only affected by water for floating objects. Gravel on the bottom weighs what gravel weighs outside of water. The principles of buoyancy doesn''t apply to stuff resting on the bottom.

As to the question: many people have 2-3 inches of gravel - so you can be sure there won't be any problems with that (or a lot of people would be very loud and upset about it! lol).

I will also slope the rock from the rear towawrds the front to help with cleaning. And since I'm not going the UGF way I was thinking of doing a canister with my HOB. Would it be ok to go with just my 2 HOB (1 is a reg power filter the other is a biowheel) for now until I'm ready to get a canister.

Thanks everyone for all the info!

Everything submerged will displace water and it's weight in effectively reduced by the weight of water it displaces. So you might add 20kg of gravel to a tank, but it might displace 10kg of water - so effectively it only adds 10kg to the total weight of the tank.

Buoyancy occurs when enough water is displaced - ie the weight of the object.
