I have a tiger barb that has been singled out and picked on. His tail fin is very short now so I separated him into a breeder net. I'm wondering if his tail fin will grow back and if he'll be ok in the net by himself. I have a total of 6 tiger barbs in a ten gallon tank.

i hope you dont have anythign else in that tank... thats getting close to being overstocked. That is why he's been picked on so much. All the fish are under overstock stress..... Its not BAD, but you are pushing the limit.add some kosher salt to the tank, i do 1/4 a cup of salt per 10 gallons. The added electrolytes will help his fin grow back faster, and will reduce some of the stress of ALL the fish in your slightly crowded tank.

Actually tiger barbs tend to do better in larger groups. When in large school the pecking order stress is diffused between more fish, and it is less likely to have one fish singled out. Of course it can still happen. However, if you want a bigger school of tigers you should look into getting a bigger tank.

PS: I have to disagree with adding salt. I would Not do that.

I know tiger barbs like to be in bigger, groups after losing a few. I started with 3 at first and tried to keep it at 3 but the pecking order always would get 1 killed off. I finally found that 6 would give them plenty to pick on and none have been killed with that amount. This 1 has been picked on for awhile. noticed his tail fin has slowly got shorter over a week or so. He's been hiding in a corner for awhile longer though. That's why I put him in the breeder cage.
I've had him for about 5 months now. I would hate to lose him. I have a 55 waiting on me to get the stand built to give them more room to chase each other.
