I am studying...this is my first tank. 55 gallon. It's all set up and now I'm just letting it acclimate. What would be good fish to start with. I'm looking for color....also, I would like some "non" fish in the aquarium.

I love platys get like ten and they will fill your tank up for you....lol

platys would work, but shrimp and loaches wont. the shrimp would probably get eaten by the loaches as soon as they were found.

platies would be a good addition to your tank, along with an angel and some tetras like diamonds or red eyes (stay away from neons if you get an angelfish, as they will get eaten), and then you could get some smaller loaches like angelicus or a species of corydoras like peppered
 
woops, guess i didnt know about shirmp and loaches

how about shrimp OR loaches

lol

Swordtails are alos cool and get a bit bigger
