I am converting my 55 gallon tank to a 100 gallon tank with plants, bala sharks, pleco, cory sterbai, and a loach (maybe more? don't know yet). Anyway, my substrate will be Onyx sand and I wasn't sure how it would look like underwater, so I put some in a jar to see what it looks like under aquarium light and was surprised... it looks like volcanic ash!!

Then I got to thinking it would be really cool to set up an aquascape that looks like a natural creek or something that is in the process of recovering from a volcanic eruption, kind of like how the local creeks looked after Mt. St. Helens erupted 20 some odd years ago. Any ideas??

I just noticed that the fish you mention are all bottom-dwelling, so there wouldnt be much movement in the other areas of the tank. Just thought I'd mention that, its a point to ponder.

Hope it helps,
Michael.

i saw a tank done like that w/ oscars once. If it was me, I would get some black kuhli loaches and some flame tetras and make a small tank with the theme. Im not sure it would work in a big tank and w/ regular fish
