My girlfriend discovered this brown round spot on her goldfish today and wasn't quite sure what it was. It's located on his gill and to the front towards his mouth, in front of his fin. Does anybody know what this could be?? It's on his gill and is flat, it does not stick out of the side of him. Is there anything that could be done to fix it???

It could be anything.... the photos lack detail (meaning they aren't very good).

Colour of the spot - Brown or 'red-brown'?

Look for a slight 'impression' of the area... could be a bacterial infection (small ulcer).

Could be the fish scuffed itself on the aquarium decor... just a minor scrape.

If the water quality is very good in the tank then best to let the fish be... and observe.

It is stated above that it is brown colored.

The spot is on his gill, right in front of his front fin. It is near the bottom of his gill section.

I would say either scuffed acrillic or somsong on thelenseofthecamera

Spot found on Goldfish......help!

It looks to me like the beginning of an ulcer. I would stop feeding your fish for a few days and make a one third water change from the bottom of the tank. You should notice a difference in the colour of the ulcer in a few days. If the tank has been set up for a long time and the gravel isn't clean, it is possible that the immune system of your fish has been compromised and it can't fight off the infection.
If the infection continues to get larger, I would check out your filtering system to make sure that it is large enough and make another one third water change from the bottom of the tank and don't be afraid to cut the feeding of your fish way back. Remember, these fish aren't getting the exercise they would normal get if in a larger pond so they don't require large amounts of feeding like pond fish.

Yours Koily, Lorraine
