My emerald green corys suprised us by laying eggs on Christmas eve in our son's aquarium. Quite a lot of eggs in fact on 3 of the 4 sides of the tank. They have laid eggs before but were quickly eaten by the guppies which is what I thought happened this time too. Wrong! I was re-arranging the tank yesterday and discovered that we have a baby cory that made it. I immediatly put him in an floating breeder trap with java moss. I've been feeding him baby brine shrimp small amounts several times a day and he will also eat the small pieces of flake food that make their way in when I feed my other fish. How long should I keep him in the "nursery" My other fish in this tank besides the corys are 3 fancy guppies & 2 platies.

i would keep it in there until its about .5 inch. The bigger it gets, the better chance it has to survive. And congratulation. If your talking about emerald green corys you might have a brochis which is related to the cory.

Wow!! Congratulations!! A lil' Christmas Cory... how cute! My cories bred a lot in my aquairum, too, but I never had any babies because of my other fish eating the eggs.
Seems like you're off to a good start. I also read somewhere that microworms and minced blackworm is great for baby cories to grow on. I'd not release the lil fella back into the aquarium until he was at least a half inch or bigger so he wouldn't be bullied too much... or perhaps buy a little 2.5 gallon for him to grow up in? You could use the smaller tank for any future babies any of your fish spawn in your larger tank, then!
Good luck and keep us posted on your little Christmas Catfish!!

Thanks for your help, I never would have imagined that I'd have a baby survive. I have thought about getting a 2.5 gallon to put on my kitchen counter, maybe this is the push I needed. I'll keep you posted on his progress. Thanks again!

 Since I last posted I found another baby, but he is only half the size of the one I found yesterday. Anyone out there have any idea on their rate of growth?

Kamryn, they seem to grow pretty fast especially if you have black worms (tubifex) available to you. I collect the eggs off the side of the tanks with my fingers they stick to me skin and then I just drop them in the breeder box. Anyways when they eat finely chopped blackworms their rate of growth seems to excellerate quite allot form the period when I was feeding mine just the baby food. Also they seem to grow remarkably fast at the beginning and after that slow down and develop and fill out, I have like 25 babies and they all seem to develop slowly after their yolk sacks are gone. However they seem to develop faster with the chopped blackworms that I feed them. Keep the water clean and pristine and if you are looking to feed them "tubifex"/ blackworms then you should chop them very fine, you don't need any special chopping tool I just chop them with a straw tip on a hard surface like a cup or something. Good Luck and have fun, hope they develop.
