Hi. I am using the smaller gravel bits (blue dyed) and have noticed the bigger gravel rocks in the stores. I think the bigger rocks are more attractive than my smaller gravel. Is one better than the other? I currently gravel vac my smaller gravel no problem--will they be a problem gravel vaccuuming the bigger pieces?

if your talking about bigger rocks like small river rock i have had a difficult time vacuming that i prefer sand but small gravel is ok also. its pretty much all about your personal preference.

It's about 3-4 times the size of the smaller gravel. It's also dyed in various colors. I just don't want vaccuming to become a bigger chore.

Your Pleco will have an easier time of it if you keep to the small size gravel. Plants will do better also.

Be careful with the painted gravel - i had blue painted gravel in a tank for about 6 years and it started to flake paint. I find natural gravel much more attactive and its available in almost all shades.

Also these types are usually bad for plants. Personally I think larger types look better... or Eco Complete if you want something dark.

My aunt and uncle did a mix when they had a planted tank. The planted areas they did in what could be considered a very fine gravel or a coarse sand, the open areas they blended into a larger gravel. It had a very natural look and everything benefited from the two different sizes. Of course, separating them during full-tank cleanings was often a little difficult (she used a pasta strainer with holes the right size to strain the smaller gravel from the larger), but it still looked GREAT!
