Hello People!!

This is a long story, but I really need advice!!

My friend's boyfriend had a Pacu who he kept with an Oscar. The Oscar bit a chunk out of his nose and was making the Pacu's life hell because the tank was too small for them both. I offered to keep the Pacu in my tank until he upsized, however, it has almost been six months and he has not upsized & I do not see it happening!

I have been keeping the Pacu in my 55 gallon tank, which is by no means big enough for him! I found a LFS to donate him to & they said they would put him in a HUGE tank with an oscar.

I currently have a feeder fish which survived a demise at the hands of my south american cichlids. He has been alive now for almost a year and is about 6-7 inches. He and the Pacu are best friends. They chase each other, nuzzle, and even share big chunks of vegetables with each other! They CONSTANTLY hang out together--if one is swimming the other is either chasing him or swimming alongside. If one is just hanging out the other is by his side. If one swims halfway to the end of the tank, the other follows him only halfway.

Anyway, now that I have found the Pacu a home I am very worried about separating them! I know they both will be sad. I do not know what to do!! I cannot keep the Pacu and the Oscar that he will be in the tank with will eat the goldfish!!!!!

I feel soooooooooo horrible about separating them! They do not even leave each others' side in my tank & I am soooooo fearful that this will be too much stress for both of them!

WHAT SHOULD I DO????????????????????
:help:

Sorry I don't have any good advice. It sounds like a tough situation. Just as we get attached to our fish, they get attached to each other.

I think you're doing the right thing--if you can't keep the pacu the best thing is to give it to the LFS. It's going to be hard but it's probably for the best.

My only other advice is to ask around among friends and friends of friends if anyone will take the fish together. It's a longshot considering how big the fish are because the person would need a large tank, but that's how I got my first fish.

And finally, even if your tank is too crowded for the pacu and feeder--if the fish are happy and healthy I say it doesn't matter.

a Pacu and a feeder Goldfish best friends?? I must say that is a really strange story. Cool though. :) I guess the things you have to consider are: Is your fish going to be happier in a larger tank, or with his friend? If your pacu continues to grow is best friend suddenly going to become best meal.

I once saw this TV show( can't remember which) that showed a pond Koi and a dog that were best friends. Whenever the dog would come to the edge of the pond the fish would swim over and let the dog lick his head.
