Hi, I'm thinking about changing the fish in my 6 year old 72 gallon. I have a cascade 1200 canister filter, florite substrate, very soft water with large amazons, anubias crypt and hygrophila. I now have 8 cardinal tetras,8 rummy nose, 1 golden algae eater and 1, 9 year old cherry barb.( the cherry stays) I would like angels, but reading so many posts, I hesitate because of the fighting that occurs. Is the canister filter spray bars detrimental to angels? Also, how many angels are suggested ? Thanks

I wouldn't worry so much about the spray bars as the fact that they will eat your cardinals if they are big enough and have been fed feeders before. You could probably put 3 angelfish in with the stock that you have now. Get medium sized fish if you can; that would eliminate the eating issue.

To minimize aggression, I would go with at least 6 similarly sized angels that you can grow out together. This really helps minimize that aggression. I've done it many times, and with other cichlids too.

A further note on aggression, angels pair up pretty easily, so if pairs form, you may need to remove them to another tank or separate the pair. As they will defend their chosen spawning area.

hth,

Thanks for the help so far, I was going to put the tetras in a 20 gallon long. I really want just angels, and corys. Any other input is gratefully excepted as I am obsessive over my tanks.

what is your pH? not that it has anything to do with the angels acctually living in the water, but it has to do with the breeding. if your pH is high, they dont like to breed.

if you want only angels and corydoras, 6 wil do fine with a group of 10 peppered, juhlii, or schwarz's corydoras

spray bars

I currently have 4 Angel fish in my community tank - (i have a picture under the members tanks section). I have a Cascade 1500 and initially the spray bars caused so much current that the angels and a few other fish completely avoided that section of the tank. I tried aiming the spray bar at the back wall but that made my nice bubble wall a mess. So i ened up just removing the spray bar and replaced it with a direct outlet. Now the fish use the entire tank and i feel much happier.

Hi again, to answer a few questions, my ph is 6.5, and I live on the south shore of Long Island, in NY. Do you think aiming the spray bars down will help? They run the entire 48" along the back wall. I think the circulation helps the plants.

your pH is fine..but keep an eye on it..you may have a low kh have you ever experienced Ph movement?
if not then you may be fine.

6 angles is a good mix but you are probably going to get a pair out of that.if you do..you may either have to remove the pair to a breeding tank or remove the other angels.

angels get extrememly aggressive when they pair up.

that said they are one of my favorite fish.

I'm not sure thr spray bars are that big of an issue..I have high filtration in my 75 (1200 gph) and power heads..if you have structure(driftwood tangles and plant) they will create calm areas in the tank.

I keep discus and angels in the tank with no problem.
