Hi everyone,
I'm new here, first post and all. I'm not new to owning fish, but haven't had them for years until just recently. I have a couple of questions, so this might be a long post. I'm pretty lost here, so please be patient with me.
I have 2 new tanks. A 55gal and a 29gal biocube, both are set up as freshwater. In the 55gallon I have 8 fish so far, 4 are 1.5-2" gouramis (blue& red neon, and 2 opaline) and 4 are small head and tail lite tetra. In the 29gal, there are 3 goldfish, one is a 4" ryukin and 2 are about an inch long pearl scale calicos. (I know the 29gal is too small, next week they will be transfered to a 75gal) --- All fish were purchased at one of chicagolands best aquarium fish stores, The Living Sea in Park Ridge, Illinois. Let me also add that this place is known for it's cleanliness and they have hundereds of tanks filled with beautiful fish!
Okay here's my problems.
The 55 gallon was set up and filled on December 22nd. On the 26th we purchased our first 6 gouramis, and when we added them, we also added a bag of Bio Spira, as recommended by the man at the fish store. Before adding and buying fish, we brought in a water sample which tested perfect.
The night upon adding the fish and the biospira, a male blood gouramis died. The following night, the female blood gouramis died as well. I called the pet store, and as instructed, I waited 5 days, brought the dead fish in, along with another water sample. The water again tested perfect, so I decided that the dead fish was a fluke and purchased 4 more gouramis, along with the 4 head and tail lite tetras. I placed them in their new home a few hours later. All seems well in 55gallon-land.
In the meantime, I set up the 29gallon biocube for freshwater fish and allowed that to run for 3 days. I go back to the same pet store, have the water tested (perfect) and purchase the 3 fantails. I have had the fantails for about a day and a half, but earlier tonight I noticed (and safely removed) a rather large fish louse off it's bottom fin next to it's fan tail. I put it in a teeny ziplok bag and saved it just in case I wanted to show the pet store.
AND in the 55gal, yesterday morning I awoke to a floating male pearl gouramis and just tonight, it's female mate has also died.
Every water test has tested perfect for me... sigh.
Now for all my questions!
Can someone PLEASE tell me what I am doing wrong here??
Is it me, or is it the pet store?
Do you think I should return ALL the fish and create a storm at the pet store?
OR treat the fish and never go back there again?
Can my beautiful fish be saved?
any suggestions? I need some serious help here.
Thanks everyone, I'm so happy I came across this website.
