I know angels can breed in water with a pH of up to 7.6, but mine is a little higher than that. Has anyone bred them using just buffers, or do you have to truly soften the water and drop pH using RO, peat, etc.?

actually if you want to breed the angels you may need to consider either distilled water or RO and add buffers. angels can breed in higher pH you just may not get as many eggs to hatchout. a higher pH may mean too many dissloved solids(calcium etc) this can make the eggs less permable and the sperm may not penetrate the eggs.

Actually I have learned that they can breed in 8+ with no buffers, distilled, RO, or driftwood.

this is true to an extent. if you want successful large hatches it is best to control the water parameters.
haveing worked closely with experienced breeders , I have found that slightly acidic conditions improve the hatch rate.
when my water drops in pH to 6.7 or so I get huge hatch rates...nearly 100%..when the pH climbs the rates drop dramatically a bad hatch has 0 hatch outs.

If I were to do this for a high success rate..I would use RO and add appropriate buffers ..
buffers are used to add missing minerals to RO..you should not have to add buffers to a pH 7.6 assuming buffers were not added to acidic water to make it more stable in pipes.
that's why I suggest testing kH and gH (one kit tests for both)..it is possible to get a higher pH from the source and 2 days later find the pH lower.(or the opposite)

Buffers are used to control pH and get it to and keep it at a specific pH. Additives and traces are used to add minerals. I am not in the angel breeding business, so I don't need 100% hatch rates. RO units are expensive and not warranted for my needs. If I ever jump into breeding discus, maybe.

as long as you understand that a low hatch rate is most likely due to the condition of the water.

I'm not sure what your point is.

it sounded like you had inquired f it was necessary to add buffers to a high pH and breed angles..answer..No

will they spawn in a higher pH..Yes

if you want a successful hatch rate then I mearly suggested that you may want to consider a RO unit and add buffers to get the RO to a specific condition to increase the hatch rate.
