Hey all, I have a question about my Blue Ram, I have just one male at this time I used to have a female but she died. They were an inseperable pair while they were mating then after that he tormented her so much that soon she quit eating and died:sad:

He has been by himself for a couple of months and seems to be ok but I just look at him and feel sad because hes the only fish I have thats not in a school or has a mate.

I know I rambled a bit but my question is should I get a female for him, or leave him alone since he is doing fine now. Dont know if he will stress by himself or what??

Thanks for the help:D

im sure he isnt saddened by the loss of his mate..i mean..he is the one that killed her...

he'll be fine alone, but if you want to throw a female in, then do so, he'll be happy either way

I would rearrange the tank and mess up his territory before you throw in a female... It may not make any difference, he might end up killing her anyway.

What is the temperature of your water? Rams like high temps - 86, etc. But, though this colors them up big time, it also makes them want to spawn more. My guess is that he is extra ... ... if I can say it that way! So, if you are keeping them up this high, and do add another female, you might turn the heat down to say 80 until she is ready to spawn. (She will get very pink/red in her tummy)

hate to hiack, how big she have to be to mate?

They start early in life - before they even get sent to the local fish stores. I'd say about 3-4 months. Perhaps 3/4 - 1 inch in size. I believe that is one way we can tell that really, they are short lived fish. The start spawning very soon, spawn like crazy and die after a year... My bolivians on the other hand just are beginning to spawn and they are 9 months old now. They will live to 6 or so years... just as an aside...

I think you are all right my little ram is a  but I love the little guy!! But I think that for now he will be doomed to a life of solitude, which I dont think hell mind.

Cathy, I keep my tank at about 78 which accomadates my other fish as well, he keeps colored most of the time also but of course at night he loses his color. I didnt know that Rams are short lived fish I hope mine can live longer than a year!!

Oh yeah I was looking at the bolivian rams, their pretty fish as well, will they get along with my blue ram? Do they have the same personalitys as the blue rams?

Most of them are milder than the blue rams. They like cooler temps so your tank temp would be great for them. How big is it? I wouldn't add a pair of Bolivians without it being at least a 20g LONG, which gives them a 30inch foot. Be sure to rearrange the tank before adding any more cichlids!
