Hi folks,

currently cycling my new tank. Taken 7 days to get a nitrite spike, and everything seems to be going fine. Except......

on close inspection of the tank, there is loads, and i mean loads of debris (and increasing over the last few days), which doesnt seem to be getting drawn into the filter. The particles are very tiny and the tank looks clear from a distance, but im worried what it might be. i dont have any real plants in the tank. ive given a water sample to a friend for them to have a look at in the lab under the microscope, but he is a busy man, and might be some time!

and i am just about ready for fish as the cycle is almost there

can anyone explain ? is it possible that its just alge?

thanks

Could it be a bacterial bloom? A bacteria bloom will make the water hazy-cloudy as the bacteria multiplies so fast to consume the ammonia or nitrite that they are free floating in the water til they settle down and attach in the tank.

From reading your post is seems as tho you have only been cycling 7 days? It usually takes avg 6 weeks to fully complete the cycling process..

it took 7 days to get a nitrite spike, that was 12 days ago. sorry i should have said. so its been cycling now for nearly 3 weeks

i thought i was going a bit daft, when i first seen tiny small white dots after 5- days or so (which appeared to be going round in tiny circles) on a small part of the tank wall. they seem to have dissapeared, now the ? bloom ? starting around day 13-14

i should say as well, that although i dont have any real plants in there, i have the light on for approx 10hrs a day, and the tank is situated in an alcove, well away from natural light.

thanks

It's just a little scum/bloom. Redirecting or rearranging filter output may help - just play w/ it a little. I'm constantly trying to walk the line between a scum-free, adequate air for the fish / not driving off the CO2 too fast.
