Moral dilemma!

I've got a moral dilemna. I have one 3-spot cory and 2 bronze cories. I recently found out 3 spots are wild caught (which I'm totally against) and was going to take it back anyway so I could get a bigger school of bronzes. But do I take it back after it's had such a hard life, or do I get more and support the wild fish
trade?
 
Whats wrong with wild caught fish? Not that im trying to argue. Just curious.

if I were you i'd give it back and get more bronze cories. I have a similar belief, i'm just lucky the owner of my LFS somehow got her group of otos to breed so that I got a captive born oto.

often times the transport from the wild to the store is very traumatic, and they sometimes use poisons like cyanide to "pacify" the fish, but this is starting to fall out of fashion. for me it depends, really. many snails are crabs harvested from the wild are too stupid to care where they are. some fish, however, for what ever reason, should never be collected IMO.

I'm just gonna take hime back. I feel bad but it happens.

Import I just don't believe in taking a fish that's lived it's life with as much room as it wants and then putting it in a tiny glass box. Breeder raised don't know the difference. Plus very few wild caughts survive the journey and go through great trauma and pain. Plus it's bad for the environment.
 
I'd take him back too. I'm sure you'll feel good about your decision.

I have the moral dillemma too when I buy wild caught Cories. I think its bad to take wild caught fish, but after this poor little fellow has been threw sooooo much and then to put him back in a pet store and probably go to a bad home? I guess I just think thats mean. Give the little fellow a chance and get him some friends. Giving back one Cory isn't gonna stop them from getting them from the wild. I feel like I'm saving Cories when I buy them at a pet store.

Are ALL 3 spot cories wild caught? Is there a source for captive bred 3 spot cories in your area? If not, perhaps you should buy a few more and begin a captive bred group that you can disseminate to other hobbyists, thereby reducing the need for wild caught stock. Given your respect for the fish, they would probably have a good home and a better chance for survival than with someone that was not aware of their origins. Remember, the ancestors of your bronze cories were "wild caught" at one time, and would not be available to you if someone hadn't done what I suggest. Just a thought....
 
The argument about cyanide being used to capture fishes in the wild would probably be best saved for a thread in the Saltwater section as I have never heard of collecting FW fishes with cyanide!

"Saving" cories from a pet store may seem noble, but it's actually a little misguided as, yes, you might be "saving" your particular ones, but will you buy the ones that the LPS/LFS gets to replace them because they sold the last batch? What about the ones to replace those ones? "Saving" fishes from LPSes/LFSes that keep them in substandard conditions actually puts more fishes at risk and fails to send the message that you wish to send.
 
Good point Chil. As long as these LFS see that there's a "demand" for these fish, the more they'll supply.
